Independent study is not like a traditional college education because you are the institute of your own learning. What Free Open University provides is guidance in determining what must be studied to accomplish the desired degree of education and documentation proving that you have done the work and know the subject matter.
If you follow our recommendations and properly document your learning, we will look at your documentation and offer an opinion or certification of substantial equivalency. This is not the same as a degree and your documentation serves as proof of your educational accomplishment.
When a university grants a degree or diploma there is no proof that you have learned the subject matter. Many universities grant degrees to people who never attended, studied or learned any of the required materials. In many developing countries universities sell degrees and corruption renders their diplomas worthless.
Documented Collegiate Independent Study is proof that you understand the material and have learned the subject matter. When we certify that your documentation meets or exceeds all accreditation requirements, anyone doubting can look at your documentation and quiz you about it. There is no faking or falsification possible.
This is the best possible education with the most credible documentation if done properly. You must write a lot of essays in your own words explaining all that you learn. If writing is difficult for you or you do not write well, you should go to a traditional university and rely on whatever un-certified diploma they grant.
If you like to write and are willing to learn to write well, you can get a better education at your own pace and for no charge. This education will be backed up by your own essays demonstrating your knowledge and proving your understanding of all the materials.
While we will issue our certification that you have demonstrated knowledge equivalent to a degree. Your certification will have room for your mentors and others who look at your work and agree to sign as well. You must recruit mentors who know you as well as leaders in your community to look at your work. Depending upon your field of study, you may want professionals in the field to sign on as well.
There is no limit to the numbers of mentors and reviewers you can have. The more mentors that agree your learning is complete, the better. There is no relying on the credibility of a corrupt university, your own words posted for all to see demonstrates your learning irrefutably.
